Jonathan P. Friday is a native Austinite, born and raised in Tarrytown. He left Austin after high school, receiving his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University and his law degree from Baylor Law School. After a short stint with a Dallas law firm following graduation from law school, Jonathan returned to Austin in 2003 and began practicing exclusively family law.
Jonathan is Board Certified in family law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and was selected through independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations as a “Rising Star” for years 2005 through 2014, and as a “Super Lawyer” for years 2014 through 2023. Jonathan has been listed in the “Best Lawyers in America” publication by Woodward White, Inc. and was selected as a fellow into the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers in 2023.
Jonathan devotes the majority of his time working on high net worth divorces dealing with business valuations, commercial property appraisals, separate property tracing, trusts, unique employee incentive plans, and other complex legal matters in and around Central Texas. His clients have included former NFL players, PGA golfers, NFL team owner, songwriters and musicians, restaurant owners, trust fund beneficiaries, developers, and many other successful business owners, public officials, entrepreneurs, executives, doctors, lawyers and their spouses.
Additionally, Jonathan has extensive expertise in working with experts to value and generating creative solutions for dividing the value and revenue from private equity firms, insurance companies, franchises, medical practices, investment firms, country clubs, restaurants, professional sports teams, law firms, start ups, book stores, music royalties, and significant wine and art collections.
Jonathan understands that divorce and child-related disputes are inherently painful and that all reasonable people want to handle their family disputes as simply and amicably as possible. He will work hard to settle disputes with minimum conflict and expense. Jonathan utilizes mediation and collaborative techniques whenever possible. However, when circumstances require action, such as when opponents refuse fair settlements or resort to inappropriate tactics, Jonathan is as strategic and as tough as they come. He is highly respected by the Judiciary of central Texas, and extremely effective in the courtroom.
Jonathan is a member of the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists, the Travis County Family Law Advocates, the Austin Bar Association, the Williamson County Bar Association, the Collaborative Law Institute of Texas, and Collaborative Divorce Austin.
Jonathan is a frequent speaker and author on family law topics at seminars sponsored by the State Bar of Texas, the University of Texas School of Law, the University of Houston Law Center, the Austin Bar Association, the Collaborative Law Institute of Texas, and various other local legal organizations.
